Mekong in need of irrigation funding

Mekong Delta will mobilise VND171.7 trillion (US$8.1 billion) to build the region's irrigation system until 2050 to adapt to climate change and sea level rises.

The budget will come from local and central State budgets, Government bonds, ODA funds, and contributions from local people.

According to the Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning, the budget will be used to build sluice gates near the sea, an inland irrigation system, dykes and reservoirs.

Man compensated after unjust punishment

A citizen was compensated with VND296 million (US$14,000) for being jailed 1,346 days after an unjust punishment following a case in HCM City's Tan Binh District in 2001.

At the time, police detained Truong Ba Nhan, of HCM City's Binh Thanh District, for allegedly stealing money from a woman, who was later murdered. Police said they had found Nhan's fingerprints on the locker of the victim. Nhan, who is a relative of the victim's husband, had visited the family and had helped adjust the locker.

The man was jailed between 2002 and 2005. In 2006 police decided to suspend the case due to insufficient evidence. Besides the compensation, a public apology will also be made in the media and at his residence. The case was never tried in court.

Filipino fishermen rescued off Spratlys

Vietnamese soldiers on Song Tu Tay Island in the Spratly Archipelago on Monday rescued six Filipino fishermen whose boats had been damaged. The fishermen were found on a raft on the sea. According to officials, the fishermen live in Marige Laec Town of Balanga City in the Philippines.
