Steel consumption rises but small firms struggle

Update: January, 05/2015 - 09:16
Many small steel companies might have to close their operations or sell to other investors in 2015 because they have outdated technology and high expenditures for production, a report from the Viet Nam's Ministry of Science and Technology has said.

This year, many state-owned steel companies will be restructured, including cuts in staff, a move expected to increase production efficiency.

In 2014, total national steel consumption was around 14 million tonnes, an increase of 17 per cent compared with 2013. Of that amount, 2.76 million tonnes were exported, an increase of 21 per cent against 2013.

TouthFood prices steady ahead of Lunar New Year

The Ministry of Industry and Trade's Information Centre has predicted that normal holiday demand for food in the upcoming traditional Tet festival and an abundant supply of goods will contribute to lower prices.

Prices for essential food like pork, chicken, eggs and vegetables will fall except for cow meat, which will rise due to a low supply.

It is expected that 39,000 tonnes of cow meat will be imported in 2015, an increase of 20-25 per cent compared with 2014, at a value of US$300 million.
