The Quang Nam Province People's Committee has allocated VND85 billion (US$4 million) to help fund the building of houses for war veterans. The committee has assigned the Department of Construction to work with local authorities to compile a list of veterans' houses that are in need of repair.

Chickens found with H5N1 in Tra Vinh
Tra Vinh Province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development discovered that 177 chickens in Cau Ke District's Phong Thanh Commune were infected with the H5N1 virus. To prevent the spread of the disease, the chickens were destroyed.
The People's Committee asked localities to step up vaccinations of other poultry in the province. More poultry farms and slaughterhouses will be disinfected, and poultry transport, sale and purchases more strictly controlled.

Authorities to build more methadone centres
The HIV/AIDS Prevention Centre in the northeast mountainous province of Lang Son has requested local authorities to build two more alternative methadone treatment centres in the districts of Van Lang and Trang Dinh and two methadone supply facilities in Lang Son City and Cao Loc District, according to Nong Thi Mai, the centre's deputy head.
An alternative methadone treatment centre in the HIV/AIDS Prevention Centre opened in August, and the centre has treated 107 addicts so far. Patients receive consulting from the centre's doctors.

Streptococcus pneumonia more resistant
Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria's resistance against some kinds of antibiotics has increased, Dr Do Sy Hien, head of Public Health Research and Consultancy Centre, said at a workshop on children's health held last Sunday in HCM City.
Dr Truong Huu Khanh, head of Paediatrics Hospital No.1's neurology and infectious diseases ward, said that the bacteria caused 26-83 per cent of the cases of acute respiratory diseases. Khanh said that parents should ensure children's hygiene and nutritional needs.
