Stocked sugar quantity hits record high

Update: October, 25/2014 - 08:35
The quantity of stocked sugar in September and October has reached a record high as the 2014-15 sugarcane season enters its peak harvest season, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported.

The country's stocked sugar totaled 350,000 tonnes as of the end of last month, two times higher than the same period last year, largely due to the high quantity of smuggled sugar.

The price of sugar has continued to decline over the past sugarcane seasons, from VND18,000-19,000 a kilo in the 2011-12 sugarcane season to VND12,000-13,000 a kilo in the 2013-14 sugarcane season. The price is expected to decline in the 2014-15 sugarcane season, according to the Viet Nam Sugarcane and Sugar Association.

Youth in Buon Ma Thuot City's Ea Kao Commune in Dak Lak Province and the Green Measure Club (whose members are students at Tay Nguyen University) have built 76 check dams at springs in Ea Kao Commune. Check dams are small dams that can be either temporary or permanent; they can reduce erosion and gullying and allow sediment and pollutants to settle.

The check dams help reduce the speed of water flow during storms. The programme, which has been implemented for the last eight months, also aims to raise public awareness of environmental protection.
