Poor given access to increased credit

The Bank of Social Policies has decided to increase loan amounts available to poor households. Beginning early this month, they will be able to borrow VND50 million (US$2,500) instead of the previous VND30 million ($1,500).

By the end of March, the bank had total capital of VND130 trillion (over $6 billion), an increase of VND834 billion ($40 million) compared with the late last year.

Traffic accidents rise during holiday season

Nationwide, there were 134 traffic accidents during the recent holiday period, leaving 73 people dead and 88 injured, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee

Accidents occurred mostly in rural areas on motorbikes. Most of the drivers involved were not wearing helmets, drinking alcohol, or transporting three to four people on their bikes.

VAT refunds for foreigners total VND33b

As of the end of February, 8,600 foreigners have received a total of VND33 billion (US$1.6 million) in VAT (value-added tax) refunds, according to the General Department of Customs.

Of that amount, HCM City's Customs Department refunded VND30 billion to 8,000 foreigners.

The Ministry of Finance said it planned to offer VAT refunds at Da Nang and Cam Ranh international airports, along with international ports. Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat international airports in Ha Noi and HCM City, respectively, are the only two cities that offer VAT refunds.

US$733 million earned from rice exports

Viet Nam exported 350,000 tonnes of rice in April, earning US$160 million. Since early this year, the country has exported nearly 1.6 million tonnes of rice with total revenue of $733 million.

China is the top importer of Vietnamese rice, with 38 per cent of the total amount. The Philippines represents 27 per cent of the total.
