Decline in H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks

Outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza are in decline, according to the National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Prevention and Control.

The country now has 33 H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks in 13 provinces and cities, with 90,068 infected poultry. Last week, the number of new outbreaks reduced significantly compared to the previous weak, according to the steering committee.

However, the Animal Health Department warned that the disease will spread if localities keep up the preventative measures.

Cao Bang border to set up economic zone

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has permitted the establishment of the Cao Bang Province border gate economic zone.

The zone will have several sections, including a non-tariff area, international border gate area, industrial parks, administrative area, urban and residential areas.

Beetles harm sugarcane in Thanh Hoa

A species of beetle that feeds on sugarcane has caused damage to 1,100ha of sugarcane in Thach Thanh and Cam Luy districts in Thanh Hoa.

The beetle density has reached 8-20 heads per sq.m in sugarcane fields, causing a reduction in yield and quality of 30-40 per cent.

HCM City provides loans for labourers

The HCM City People's Committee has funded VND137 billion (US$6.5 million) to the city's 24 districts to provide loans to help households with high unemployment rates, to find work.

Around 8,060 households will receive with the aim of creating jobs for 10,154 labourers.
