Ministry seeks $1.4b loan for social-housing

The Ministry of Construction has asked the State Bank of Viet Nam to offer loans from the national VND30 trillion ($1.42 billion) social-housing loan package under the Government's resolution 2.

The loans would be used to pay for social housing projects (a total of 2,574 apartments) and commercial housing projects (1,180 apartments) that have been turned into social housing. The total loan amount would be VND645 billion ($30.6 million).

VND70b needed for trade promotion

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that VND70 billion ($3.32 million) was needed for the national trade promotion this year compared with VND93.73 billion ($4.45 million) last year. The ministry has already approved 117 projects worth VND30.03 billion ($1.42 million), which will be implemented in the first and second quarter.

Sugar stockpile reaches 400,000 tonnes

The Viet Nam Sugarcane and Sugar Association has reported an oversupply of sugar with a stockpile of 400,000 tonnes last year, which is expected to soar to 600,000 tonnes this year. This has been attributed to an oversupply of sugar due to the smuggling of sugar into Viet Nam across the southwestern border with Cambodia.

Vietnam Airlines adds flights on main routes

The national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, has announced that it would add an additional nine flights on both routes: HCM City and Ha Noi (from January 24-26) and HCM City and Da Nang (from January 24-28). To date, the carrier has increased the number of flights on these two main routes by 45 per cent to meet demand for travel during Tet (Lunar New Year).

Binh Duong attracts $300m in FDI

The southern province of Binh Duong attracted total foreign direct investment (FDI) of $300 million in the first three weeks of this month, triple the figure in the same period last year. The province attracted $1.3 billion of FDI last year and it set a target of $1 billion this year.
