Banks have committed to lending more than VND1.88 trillion ($89.3 million) to 1,789 borrowers under the Government's VND30 trillion ($1.42 billion) social housing package, and have already lent VND758.6 billion ($36 million), according to the State Bank of Viet Nam.

Dak Nong budgets $1.3m for Tet gifts
The People's Committee of the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong said it has earmarked VND27 billion ($1.3 million) for buying Tet gifts for the poor and people who contributed to the country's war efforts.
It said it would also gift rice to poor people in rural areas.

City increases subsidies for public buses
HCM City provided subsidies worth nearly VND1.39 trillion ($66 million) for public bus services last year, an increase of more than VND100 billion ($4.75 million) over 2012.
In recent years, the subsidy has been rising consistently — it was VND1.269 trillion ($60.3 million) in 2011 and VND1.289 trillion ($61.2 million) in 2012.

PM approves Tet rice largesse for poor
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a scheme to provide rice to poor people for Tet (the Lunar New Year).
The Finance Ministry will provide 12,322 tonnes from the national reserve to people in the provinces of Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Yen Bai, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Phu Yen, and Ninh Thuan.

City vegetable gardens get safety nods
Around 98 per cent of the more than 14,700 hectares of vegetable farms in HCM City have been issued safety certificates, according to a report from the city Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The city now has more than 3,000ha under vegetable cultivation. Last year, the city's total vegetable output hit 336,000 tonnes with a total value of over VND1.8 trillion ($85.5 million), up 3.6 per cent over 2012.
