More than 62.9 million people nationwide are now protected by social and health insurance as of the end of last year, up 4.6 per cent against 2012, the Viet Nam Social Insurance reported at a meeting held in Ha Noi on Tuesday.
Last year, social insurance agencies in provinces and cities nationwide sued 1,954 firms for owing insurance fees to their employees.

Transport projects earmarked for this year
The Ministry of Transport will begin construction of 35 major transport projects and complete constructing a further 58 transport projects this year.
To meet the targets, the ministry will boost construction progress of major transport projects, including the project of upgrading and widening the National Highway No.1 and several expressway projects: Noi Bai – Lao Cai, Ha Noi - Hai Phong, Da Nang – Quang Ngai, HCM City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay.

Meat production continues to grow
The country produced about 4.3 million tonnes of livestock and poultry meat last year, up 1.5 per cent against 2012, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported at a meeting held in Ha Noi on Tuesday.
Of this figure, 85,300 tonnes were buffalo meat, 285,400 tonnes was beef, 3.2 million tonnes were pork and 746,000 tonnes were poultry.

Ha Noi to invest $2b on wastewater plants
Ha Noi is to spend more than VND42 trillion (US$2 billion) implementing 19 waste water collection and treatment projects in the capital city, between now and 2020, according to the city People's Committee.
Of the capital, VND19 trillion will be from official development assistance loans, VND4.3 trillion will be from the State budget and the rest will be from investors.

Ethnic households in City escape poverty
HCM City donated VND3.1 billion (US$147,000) to nearly 8,000 poor ethnic minority households last year, the city's Nationality Committee reported at a meeting on Tuesday.
A total of 2,445 poor ethnic minority households have escaped poverty thanks to the city's support.
The city's Nationality Committee also gave scholarships worth a total of VND1.2 billion for ethnic minority students last year.
