Over the last three years, police have busted around 12,600 criminal gangs, arrested over 41,600 people and confiscated goods and property worth VND142 billion (US$7 million). Many major criminal gangs in the northern provinces of Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Hung Yen and HCM City have been eradicated.
In the coming months and years, the nation's police force will step up the campaign against organised crime, authorities have pledged.

Students drop out of school in Mekong Delta
At least 20,000 students have dropped out of school so far this year, according to statistics compiled for the Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta.
This negates the year-on-year increase of 32,700 in enrolment that saw the school year start with around 3.2 million students in 6.500 schools. Of this increase, kindergartens accounted for 11,000 additional pupils, followed by primary schools with 7,000.

Smuggling, commercial cheating on the up
Smuggling and other forms of commercial cheating has increased over the years in HCM City. In 2010, the city's Customs Department registered 3,553 cases, and this increased to 6,122 in 2011 and nearly 7,000 in 2012. In the first 11 months of this year, over 5,600 cases have been found.
So far this year, the department has confiscated nearly 83kg of heroin and 2,630 pills of other illegal drugs.

Import of ‘low level' firecrackers approved
The Ministry of Public Security has agreed with a proposal made by the Defense Ministry to allow the import 20,000 boxes of "low level" firecrackers that can be used for the upcoming Tet (Lunar New Year) festival at the end of January 2014. The "low level" firecrackers will have a limited range and visibility. The approval of firecracker imports follows a huge fire that destroyed a major fireworks factory in the northern province of Phu Tho in October.
