Drought parches central region

Prolonged heat and drought have caused a severe shortage of water in the central region, and authorities warn that without rain soon the damage to the rice crop will increase daily.

Farmers planted more than 100,000ha of the summer-autumn rice crop and are now struggling to find water for irrigation since most reservoirs and ponds have dried up.

Binh Dinh is the hardest hit province with more than 6,000ha of rice crop facing a severe water shortage, according to the province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
