Tollbooth closures leaves ministry short of cash

The General Department of Roads has told the Ministry of Transport that it needs VND1.2 trillion to pay off highway builders since it prematurely closed 20 tollbooths across the country and plans to close four others.

The ministry is authorised to negotiate with builders about the finances related to highway construction.

People beginning to smoke younger: surveys

Recent surveys reveal that an increasing proportion of young people smoke and that the minimum age of smokers is going down.

Around 17.6 per cent of boys and 5.6 per cent of girls under 10 have smoked at least once.

About 6.5 per cent of boys aged 13-15 smoke regularly.

7,000ha of crops lost to drought

Showers around the country in recent days helped mitigate the drought somewhat, but they have been too light, leaving especially the central and Central Highlands provinces still grappling with drought.

Around 25,000ha of rice, 62,000ha of coffee and 19,000ha of other crops lack water, and 7,000ha have been destroyed.
