Delta lacks machines, workers for harvesting

Update: March, 30/2013 - 09:32
Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta farmers are finding it difficult to rent machines and workers to harvest the winter-spring rice as the peak harvest season approaches.

The delta has 1.5 million hectares of rice and 9,000 combine-harvesters that meet only 50 per cent of the demand.

Many farmers in Hau Giang Province, for instance, have not been able to hire machines to harvest their winter-spring rice.

The wages of workers hired to harvest paddy manually have also increased two-fold, but they are still hard to find, according to the province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
