Volunteers donate 912,310 units of blood

Update: March, 21/2013 - 09:14
Voluntary donors last year gave a total of 912,310 units of blood, up 13.2 per cent against 2011 and double the amount of 2007.

Voluntary donations have helped curb the country's blood shortages, the National Steering Committee of Voluntary Blood Donation reported at a meeting on Tuesday.

The committee targets receiving more than 1 million units of blood this year. At least 1.15 per cent of the country's population participates in blood donations.

Large-scale rice field development still slow

The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta has about 70,000ha of large-scale rice fields while the region has 1.5 million ha of rice, even after four years of developing large-scale rice fields.

Food companies have not bought all the paddy from large-scale rice fields, although it meets standards for exports.

This has prevented the development of large rice fields under a programme of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Experts said the government should develop policies that require rice exporters to sign contracts to buy paddy from these large fields.
