Fishermen assist beached whale in Bac Lieu

Fishermen in southern coastal Bac Lieu Province have successfully assisted a whale that had been "grounded" at the Nha Mat Beach by strong sea waves. The whale, weighing around 700kg and is 2.5m long, was protected by a canal with a roof made by the fishermen to supply water and keep it cool. It was led to the sea at high tide.

Fishermen along the coast in Viet Nam consider whales as sea saints, so they attempt to rescue them or bury those found dead. The bones are later kept in shrines where the whale is the deity.

Reservoir levels suggest power shortage

Reservoirs of hydro-power plants in the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam as well as the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak are reporting a critical shortage of water for operations. Most of the reservoirs have only half the water they need to produce power to their designed capacity, and some have just 30 per cent. Since the rainy season has almost ended, the reservoirs are not likely to get much more water.
