EVN promises no power outages during holidays

Electricity of Viet Nam's HCM City office has assured the public there will be no power cuts during upcoming major holidays, namely, Christmas (December 24-25, 2012), New Year (Dec.31, 2012 and January 1, 2013) and Tet (Lunar New Year) February 8-12 (28th day of the last lunar month to the 3rd day of the new lunar year).

Vinatexmart opens Chau Doc outlet

Vinatexmart, a retail chain under the Viet Nam National Garment and Textile Corporation, opened a new outlet in Chau Doc Town in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Province of An Giang on Tuesday.

Vinatexmart, which now has 79 outlets nation-wide including the major cities of Ha Noi, HCM City, Dong Nai, Phan Thiet and Can Tho, spent nearly VND30 billion (US$1.4million) on the latest outlet.

More English teachers may be needed

Viet Nam will need 12,000 teachers of English if the language is taught two hours a week for primary schools students from the third grade upwards, officials said at a seminar organised by Da Nang City's Foreign Language College on Monday. A survey conducted by the Ministry of Education and Training in 2008 showed that the country had 6,400 English teachers in its primary schools.

Dong Nai poor receive free check-ups

The Communist Youth Union of Dong Nai Province, in co-operation with the province's Young Doctors Club on Sunday gave free medical check-ups and medicines to nearly 300 poor people in Tan Phu District's Dac Lua village. The Youth Union also presented 200 gifts including text books and school kits worth more than VND30 million (US$1,428) to poor students in the village.
