Despite a challenging economic environment, the country's tourism industry aims to attract 42 million visitors, including 7 million foreigners, in 2013, a conference heard in HCM City on Wednesday. At the meeting, domestic tourist agencies and companies discussed ways to improve the industry and to reach the target.

More than 5,700 firms set up in November
The Ministry of Planning and Investment reported that 5,773 enterprises with total capital of VND25 trillion (US$1.2 billion) registered to open in the country this month, bringing the total to 62,794 new enterprises for the year so far. From October 2011 to November 2012, new enterprises registered total capital of VND403 trillion ($19 billion), a drop of 8.4 per cent compared to the previous corresponding period.

Smoking kills 40,000 people a year in VN
Tobacco kills 40,000 people per year in Viet Nam, according to the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance. The figure is expected to reach 70,000 by 2030 if effective measures are not taken. In HCM City, 53 per cent of men and 2 per cent of women smoke. The country is one of the world's top 15 countries with the greatest numbers of smokers. The government, agencies and organisation are working together to minimise the danger of smoking to human health and to socio-economic development.
