More HCM City workers now jobless

More than 116,000 laid-off workers in HCM City have claimed unemployment benefits in the first nine months of this year, a third higher than in the same period last year, according to Nguyen Cao Thang, deputy director of the city Job Promotion Centre.

Of them 90,000 have been paid benefits totalling VND814 billion (US$38.9 million).

$3.74m invested in climate change protection

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has approved a project to improve the durability of infrastructure against climate change in 15 northern mountainous provinces by 2015.

The US$3.74 million project is funded by the Global Environment Facility through the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Development Programme.

Phu Yen eyes development of co-operatives

The Party Committee of central Phu Yen Province has asked the People's Committee to focus on developing co-operatives.

The province hopes to have 170 co-operatives and 190,000 members by 2015, and 190 co-operatives and 222,000 members in 2020.

It also aims to attract and train 100 young agricultural engineers and economics graduates for the co-operatives.

Government approves Nha Trang master plan

The Government has approved a master plan for the resort city of Nha Trang for the period up to 2050.

The city will have a total area of 26,547ha, including 1,287ha currently belonging to Dien An and Dien Toan communes.

The city will become a tourism hub, a destination for national and international events, and a health, education, economic, and scientific centre for the south-central coast and Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) region.
