VN prepares to prevent SARS-like virus

Dr Nguyen Van Binh, head of the Ministry of Health's Preventive Medicine Department, said they asked concerned agencies to be on alert for a new SARS-like virus and act promptly to prevent its spread if it is found. The country has had no recorded case of the new virus so far. The World Health Organisation on Wednesday affirmed the discovery of a new virus from the same family as SARS - the virus that spread globally in 2003 and killed hundreds of people. So far, the new virus is known to have affected two people, one of whom – a Saudi Arabian – has died.

VND2.5 trillion earmarked for student loans

The Ministry for Finance has issued a decision under which the Viet Nam Bank for Social Policies will have an additional VND2.5 trillion for pupil and student loans under a credit programme to support poverty alleviation.

City to expedite work on Sai Gon 2 Bridge

Le Quang Hoa, director of the management board that is implementing the Sai Gon 2 Bridge Project, said on Tuesday that constructors would speed up work in order to complete construction two months ahead of schedule.

This will allow the bridge to be opened to traffic at the end of next year.

The six-lane Sai Gon 2 Bridge will be 913m long and 23.5m wide.

Pre-packaging plastic exempt from tax

Plastic issued in pre-packaged goods and plastic bags that meet criteria set by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will not be subject to the environmental protection tax, under a new Government decree.

The decree says the thin plastic bags made with HDPE (high density polyethylene resin), LDPE (low density polyethylene) or LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene resin) are subject to pay the environmental protection tax. The decree takes effect on November 15 this year.

Budget approved for Delta irrigation project

The Government has approved a VND172 trillion budget for irrigation projects in the Mekong Delta that will be carried out in the 2012-2020 period.

The irrigation works are aimed at protecting the property and livelihoods of 32 million people in the delta's coastal and flood-prone areas.
