HCM City has 36 old bridges, mostly located in the rural districts of Cu Chi, Nha Be, Hoc Mon and Can Gio, that need to be upgraded, according to the Department of Transport. The city needs VND5.7 trillion (US$272 million) for the task, it estimates.

City grows 9.6 per cent in third quarter
HCM City's gross domestic product (GDP) growth has risen from 7.4 per cent in the first quarter to 9.6 per cent in the third quarter, says Thai Van Re, director of the city's Department of Planning and Investment. The city's GDP amounted to over VND404.7 trillion (US$19 billion) in the year's first nine months, or an increase of 8.7 per cent over the same period last year, which he said was a reasonable growth rate.
In the fourth quarter, the city plans to increase its GDP by 10.3 per cent to achieve a growth of 9.2 per cent for 2012.

Best Book award bestowed on 14 titles
Fourteen books in different genres have received the Best Book 2012 award given by Sachhay.com, a project carried out by PACE, a business education organisation.
More than 40 experts in culture, literature and history, including veteran author Nguyen Ngoc and cultural researcher Quach Thu Nguyet were invited to join the jury to select the award winners.
Sachhay.com aims to encourage publishers and writers to introduce higher quality books and promote the reading habit, particularly among young Vietnamese.
