Can Tho improves workplace safety

The Can Tho People's Committee has approved a labour-safety programme until 2015 aiming to safeguard workers from accidents. The city will spend VND5 billion (US$238,000) to train employers in protecting workers from workplaces accidents and 80 per cent of personnel working in hazardous environments and in sectors having strict safety regulations.

Fish exports to US rise 30% this year

Tra fish exports to the US in the first eight months increased by 30 per cent year-on-year to nearly US$300 million, according to the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters ad Producers. Tra exports to the US are expected to continue rising in the coming time. Shrimp exports to the US and EU have fallen this year, but shipments to Asian countries and territories like Taiwan and Japan have increased. Shrimp exports to Australia have risen 65 per cent to more than $66 million.

$271m needed to repair, replace bridges

The HCM City Transport Department estimates that the city will need VND5.7 trillion (US$271.4 million) to strengthen and rebuild 36 weak and inadequate bridges.

Of this amount, the reconstruction of just one bridge, the Cau Da in Hoc Mon District, will cost VND2.25 trillion ($107million). Most weak bridges are located in suburban areas like Districts 9, 12, Hoc Mon, Nha Be, and Cu Chi, according to the department.
