Books given to poor students on island

More than 12,000 textbooks were sent to poor students on Ly Son Island off Central Quang Ngai Province on Monday. The books were collected during the "Books for Ly Son Island" campaign launched August 1-15 by Quang Ngai's students who are studying in HCM City. The campaign also presented 55 scholarships worth more than VND31 million (US$1,476) to underprivileged students on the island.

Phu Yen hit by dengue fever

Phu Yen Province's Department of Health said 470 cases of dengue fever had been reported since the beginning of this year, with Phu Cau District the worst affected with more than 140 cases, followed by Phu Yen town with 130. No deaths have been reported.

The province's Department of Preventive Medicine and local authorities are spraying insecticides to kill mosquitoes in high-risk areas.

The People's Committee of central Quang Ngai Province has approved VND1.4 billion (US$66,666) for human-resources training at small – and medium-sized businesses in the province for 2013.

Forests burned to make way for farms

Since the beginning of this year, 1,915ha of forest areas have been burnt down, two times higher than the same period last year, according to the Forest Protection Department. Sources from the department said that as of August 20, newly afforested areas reached only 99,700ha, down 10 per cent year-on-year. People in many localities in northern mountainous areas, the Central Highlands and the central coastal areas still burn down trees for farming.
