Dengue fever on increase in HCM City

The number of dengue fever patients in HCM City spiked in May to reach 648, an increase of 27.1 per cent over April, according the city's Preventive Medicine Centre. In the first five months of this year, the city had a total of 3,513 people contracting dengue fever, three of whom succumbed to the disease.

Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe bridges to be rebuilt

The HCM City People's Committee has approved the city's Investment Management Board for Urban Traffic Works to invest in projects constructing the Bong, Kieu and Le Van Sy bridges crossing the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal. The new bridges will replace existing ones that are in degraded condition. The three new bridges are estimated to cost around VND600 billion (US$28.5 million).

Boy, 10, loses life while saving others

The body of 10-year-old Dinh Phu Quoc, who saved two drowning children on June 5, was found the next day. Quoc saw two children reaching their hand out of the water repeatedly as they drowned in the middle of a local river. He jumped in and saved both of them. But he wore himself out in doing so and was swept away. Quoc was descirbed as an excellent pupil at the Le Ngoc Gia Secondary School in central Quang Nam Province's Dien Ban District.

More tourists visit Dong Thap Province

The southern province of Dong Thap has welcomed 730,000 tourists since the beginning of this year. Of these, 19,000 were foreigners. The province's total revenue from tourism in the first five months reached VND81 billion ($3.9 million), an increase of 18.28 per cent over the same period last year.

City to spend $4.2m on ferry station

The HCM City Bridge and Ferry Works One-Member Co Ltd has requested the Department of Transport to petition the People's Committee to allocate funds for expanding the Cat Lai Ferry station linking District 2 and Dong Nai Province's Nhon Trach District this year. The estimated capital for the project is VND89 billion ($4.2 million). The project is expected to be completed next year.

Gender parity course takes place for scribes

The HCM City Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs on Wednesday held a training course on promoting gender equality for reporters and members of editorial staff of city publications. The course was part of activities undertaken by the city to implement the national strategy for fostering gender equality in 2012 and 2013.
