EVN denies power price hike rumour

National power utility Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) has denied rumours that it was set to increase the power rate by 5 per cent soon.

Earlier this month, a senior EVN official had said it was considering a proposal to increase power prices at a "proper time".

Last year EVN increased the electricity prices twice with a total hike of 20 per cent.

2012 to see sharp population growth

The General Office for Population and Family Planning has said the nation's population would increase sharply this year with a large number of children born in the Year of the Dragon that is widely believed to be a propitious year.

So far this year, 87,000 children have been born for a year-on-year increase of 10 per cent. Around 8,000 of these are third children, an increase of over 20 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year.

This had never happened in the previous dragon years in 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964 and 1952.

Wind power plant worth $62m approved

Authorities in Soc Trang have approved a US$62 million wind power project in the southern province's Tran De District.

The Lien Nghia Investment Joint Stock Company will be the project's sole investor.

The plant, with a total capacity of 29.9MW, is expected to contribute more than 77.8GW of power to the national grid per year. It is scheduled to become operational next year.

Careless tourists blamed for forest fires

The Forestry Department in the central city of Da Nang has warned that the number of forest fires caused by tourists has reached an alarming rate.

Companies that run ecological tours had not been able to control their clients' activities in and around the forest, it said.

It said the main causes of the fires were tourists' cooking, trashing lit cigarettes and other careless activities.
