The Central Highlands province of Dac Lac lost 140,000ha of natural forests in the past 10 years chiefly from illegal logging, according to figures from the province's Forestry Department. The province has 560,000ha of natural forests, down from 700,000ha in 2001.

HCM City builds houses for low-income earners
HCM City's People's Committee has urged the Construction Department to complete procedures soon so that contractors can start construction on 11,000 houses for public employees, workers and low- income earners. Construction of the houses was approved by the People's Committee last year.
The houses will be built in Nha Be District's Phuoc Kien Village by the South Saigon Development Joint Stock Company, and in Binh Chanh District's Phong Phu Village by the Binh Chanh Construction Investment Company. The two contractors were chosen by city authorities.

Internet subscribers increase
The number of internet subscribers in Viet Nam was estimated at 4.3 million last month, a year-on-year increase of 18.2 per cent, according to the General Statistics Office. The number of internet users in the country climbed to 32.6 million this year.

HIV/AIDS patients on the rise
Last month, 833 people were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in provinces and cities around the country, bringing the total number of patients of the disease to 250,950; and of these, 101,800 have developed full-blown AIDS. At least 52,400 people have died from AIDS in the country since the first HIV/AIDS case was detected in 1990 in HCM City.
