Seafood firms lack raw materials

Processing factories under the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) are short of tra raw fish for production. VASEP aims to earn US$2 billion from tra fish exports this year, up from last year's US$1.8 billion. To reach this target, processing facilities will need about 1.3 million tonnes of raw fish. However, many farmers in the Mekong Delta have stopped raising the fish because fish feed prices have increased and farmers have had difficulty accessing bank loans. The price of tra fish in the Mekong Delta provinces rose to a record-high of VND26.500 a kilo this week.
