Workers receive free legal advice

Law advisory groups founded by trade unions gave free legal advice to 44,000 workers in the country last year, according to the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour.

Most workers met them to seek information about labour laws and policies to help them safeguard their rights.

Can Tho ferries operating illegally

Residents in Can Tho have raised the alarm about many ferries in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta city not having licences and boat pilots not having professional training. Can Tho usually receives a large number of tourists during Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays.

There are 54 unlicensed ferry stations out of a total of 140 in the city.

There have been 10 boat accidents since 2008 in which 11 people were killed, according to the local Transport Department.

Province launches traffic safety drive

The 2012 Traffic Safety Campaign was launched by authorities of the central province of Ninh Thuan on Monday.

The province will try to reduce road accidents by 10 per cent and traffic jams by 20 per cent this year.

Binh Duong plans housing project

The southern province of Binh Duong will build nearly 2 million sq. metres of housing for more than 175,000 people at a cost of VND11 trillion (US$524 million) by 2015.

Under a project approved recently by the provincial People's Committee, VND8.1 trillion ($386 million) will be spent on building 1.2 million sq.m of housing for workers in industrial parks and low income earners.
