Update: April, 19/2018 - 14:49

Educational experts believe that by focussing on education in three main training fields of business, technology and health science VinUni could become one of 50 best universities in the world.

Some 28 days after the group announced its decision to join the higher education field by establishing VinUni University (VinUni), Vingroup signed a strategic cooperation agreement with two of the top 20 leading universities in the world, US-based Cornell and Pennsylvania (Penn) early on April.

At the signing ceremony, Prof. Rohit Verma, dean of external relations, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business (Cornell University) expressed his confidence that Vingroup and its partners, Cornell and Penn, have the great opportunity to create VinUni University, turning it into one of the top universities in the world.

It may take a few years, a decade or even longer, but VinUni definitely will be in the list of top 50 universities in the world, according to Prof. Rohit Verma.

Prof. Larry Jameson, Penn executive vice president-cum-dean of the Perelman School of Medicine, said that VinUni - Cornell – Penn alliance has had a close collaboration, with a young and dynamic team full of the spirit of innovation.

"These are the key elements that create value and the advantage of VinUni," Prof. Larry Jameson said.

Vingroup Vice President Lê Mai Lan said that sufficient conditions for the success of VinUni would be the choice of an appropriate direction.

“VinUni University will focus on the education and training in three key areas including business, technology and health sciences,” Lan said.

"These are specific subjects, focusing on key areas where Việt Nam has the potential to develop and requires innovation to create sustainable competitive advantages. These are Tourism; Real estate; Retail, Industry and Health, Public health," Lan said.
VinUni will consider opening more training in other fields, Lan added.

Quality is better than quantity

Education expert Đàm Quang Minh said that focusing on the three training fields is a move into the right direction for VinUni, a successful way that many universities world famous have done successfully.

"Talking about a famous university, people often think of the fields that make up the school's name, as with MIT is Technology, Harvard is the social sciences, business and management, Stanford is natural science and technology," Minh said.

For VinUni’s partners, Cornell and Penn, Cornell is proud of Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering while Penn is famous with Perelman School of Medicine and Pennsylvania Nursing School.

A member of the National Education and Human Resource Development Council said that it is very difficult to reach an international quality.

"It is very difficult to develop training programmes that meet international quality standards and accreditations. However, with three announced training fields, VinUni absolutely could be successful because Cornell is strong in business, hospitality, technology and engineering and technology training, while Penn has a global reputation for health science training," the expert emphasised.
“This is an advantage and also a foundation for VinUni to quickly rise up to become a world class training centre in regional and the world, the expert said.

"We want to achieve a breakthrough quality in higher education and create in the country a world-class university that is accredited and ranked following international standards, has excellent ability in teaching and researching, contributing to key economic fields in Viet Nam and the global knowledge economy," Vingroup Vice President Lan added.

VinUni and Cornell will comprehensively work together in developing strategy and brand and building an overall university management system. Cornell will help VinUni in various activities such as infrastructure assessment, human resource recruitment and designing education programmes.
As a leading clinical hospital system in the United States, Penn will support VinUni in recruitment and developing the professional abilities of lectures and students in the field of health sciences. Penn will work directly with VinUni and Vinmec Medical System to develop training programmes for physicians and clinical residents and will develop a bachelor of science in nursing programme following local and international requirements and standards.
