KON TUM – The Central Highland Kon Tum Province's Dak Ha Province needs up to VND21 billion ($1 million) to graft new coffee branches onto old stock that has lost most of its productivity.
About 700ha of 30-year-old coffee bushes are in need of the rejuvenation technique.
Cao Trong Tuan, chairman of Viet Nam National Coffee Corporation's 734 Coffee Co Ltd said the company had about 300ha of the old and stunted coffee bushes. They produced about nine to 10 tonnes per hectare, about half as much as young bushes.
It is estimated the company would have to pay VND30 million (US$1,400) to rejuvenate one hectare of old coffee fresh.
The province now has over 7.000ha of old and stunted coffee. – VNS
