DA NANG – A fire that broke out last night in central Da Nang City's Lien Chieu District destroyed about 7ha of 10-year-old keo trees planted by local residents.
Due to difficulties in accessing the area, it took 200 soldiers, militia and local residents three hours to contain the fire. However, small fires continued to smoulder this morning with fire-fighters continuing work to fully extinguish the blaze.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Also in Lien Chieu District, another fire destroyed about 20ha of planted forest two days ago. The fire was caused by local residents who lit the blaze to clear land for a new plantation.
Elsewhere, in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue's Huong Thuy Township, one hectare of a five-year-old tree plantation yesterday caught fire after being set alight by local residents burning votive papers for the dead at a nearby cemetery.
Army statistics show that 762ha of natural and planted forests were burnt down during the first half of the year. - VNS
