Forests illegally cut down in Dak Lak

Update: August, 07/2012 - 14:24

HA NOI – Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has ordered the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to take urgent steps to stop rampant deforestation in Central Highland Dak Lak's Ea H'Leo District.

The move came after mass media recently reported that the district was a hot spot for illegal logging.

The province has lost more than 9,000 ha of forest since 2008, according to a recent report issued by the local Forest Management Division.

Negligence and rampant poaching by outsiders and locals has been blamed for the situation.

The poachers prefer two species of timber – Cam xe (Xylia xylocarpa) and Ca chac (Shorea obtuse).

Local authorised agencies have seized 1,300 logs of wood since the beginning of the year. – VNS
