Golf event raises cash for charity
A charity golf tournament that concluded Sunday at the Song Be Golf Course in Binh Duong Province, has raised US$62,000 to help disabled children.
The one-day tournament attracted the participation of 143 members of Song Be Golf Club, as well as local and foreign businessmen living in Binh Duong and HCM City.
Tournament organisers donated the funds raised to the Binh Duong Association for supporting Disabled Children, the Red Cross chapter in Thuan An District, the Thuan An General Hospital and the Binh Duong Fatherland Front.
V-League champs fall to AFC cup
After losing in their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Championship qualifying play-off match, V-League champions SHB Da Nang have dropped down into the AFC Cup.
Viet Nam's top team has been listed in group G together with Persiwa Wamena of Indonesia, South China from Hong Kong and the Maldives' VB Sport Club.
Their first match will be away against South China on February 24.
Da Nang lost 0-3 on home turf to Thai-League champs, Muang Thong United, in the play-off match on Sunday.
Fencers to compete on world stage
National fencers will participate in the world championships which will be held in France on November 4-13.
According to Phung Le Quang, head of the Fencing Department of the National Sports Administration, the team will also compete at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in October.
Quang said his athletes will have a good opportunity to prepare for these important tournaments at the Asian Fencing Championships in South Korea in July and the Southeast Asian Fencing Championships in Thailand in April.
Young competitors will also be sent to Singapore for the first ever Youth Olympics on August 14-18.
Master Liem among Moscow elite
Vietnamese chess master, Le Quang Liem is sitting in the top ten after three rounds of the Moscow Open 2010.
Liem yesterday drew with Vitaly Kunin of Germany to earn 2.5 points and rank sixth.
The Vietnamese master who is the 16th seed, earlier defeated two Russian rivals on Monday. In his next match, Liem will play against Yaroslav Yandemirov of the host nation.
Liem is the only Vietnamese representative at the event, which has lured 187 of the best players in the world such as Alexander Motylev of Russia, Bu Xiangzhi of China and Viktor Bologan of Moldova. — VNS
