Laos named as replacement for Maldives at VFF Cup

The Laos national team will replace the Maldives at this month's Viet Nam Football Federation Cup in HCM City.

The Maldives had been expected to compete for the Cup, but withdrew some days ago.

Laos will face students from Turkmenistan and South Korea, as well as Viet Nam.

Laos and Turkmenistan are attending the tournament for the first time. South Korea finished third in 2010.

The tournament will start on October 24 and conclude four days later. Teams will compete in a round robin format, with the two strongest entering the final.

The winners will receive US$25,000, while the runners-up and third-placed teams will take home $10,000 and $5,000, respectively. Hosts Viet Nam will play Indonesia in a friendly match on October 16 in Ha Noi, before flying to HCM City two days later for the tournament. — VNS
