Viet Nam in great shape for ASEAN
HCM CITY (VNS) — Viet Nam have prepared well for the ASEAN Football Federation's Women's Football Championships that will kick off today at Thong Nhat Stadium, according to Chen Yun Fa, head coach of the football team.
Chen, along with coaches from five other teams, spoke at a press conference yesterday in HCM City.
"Our team has had the best preparation for the tournament, but we respect all other teams and will try our best in every match," he said.
"Thailand, Myanmar and Viet Nam have the best opportunity to win the title, and the team that takes advantage of its chances will come out on top," he added.
The championship, which has been held seven times, will end on September 20. It has attracted seven teams in the region.
They are divided into two groups. Group A includes Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and host team Viet Nam. Group B features defending champions Thailand, Laos and Malaysia. Indonesia withdrew from the tournament.
Myanmar, runner-up last year, and Thailand present the two biggest obstacles for Viet Nam to claim the title.
Winning the title is not a priority for Thailand, which instead is focusing on trying out new players from the U19 team to prepare for the 27th Southeast Asia (SEA) Games next year in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, Myanmar said that its goal is to build a team to win the SEA Games at home. But they would try their best to perform well.
"We had a good training session in Japan. It's not easy to compete because all teams prepared well," Myanmar's representative, Khin Saw Oo, said.
The players from Laos have improved in recent years, finishing fourth last year, and the team will be one of the strongest candidates for a place in the semifinals this year, besides Thailand, Myanmar and Viet Nam.
Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore do not have a realistic chance of going beyond the group stage, but they hope to have better performances than last year. — VNS
