Chess grandmaster Liem picks up the pieces in Turkey

Viet Nam's top chess player Le Quang Liem has regained his Super Grandmaster title after his success at the 40th World Chess Olympiad, which wrapped up in Turkey on Sunday.

With six wins and four draws, Liem helped the Vietnamese men's team finish seventh out of 150 in the tournament. This result increased the 21-year-old's Elo rating by 14.7 points, to 2,707.7. Liem also moved up 17 places in the World Chess Federation rankings, from 53rd to 36th.

The HCM City-born master will defend his title at the Spice Cup in Texas, US from October 13-21.– VNS
