Wrestler Hang secures silver in women's event at junior champs

Vu Thi Hang came home with a silver medal in the women's 48kg freestyle event at the World Junior Wrestling Championships, which wrapped up on Sunday in Thailand.

This is the third time in recent years that Viet Nam has won a silver medal in the tournament.

Hang received a wild card to progress to the second round, where she defeated Poland's Sara Jezierzanska 3-0. She then provided one of the surprises of the competition with an emphatic 9-0 victory over Honduras's Brendayamyleth Bailey Gomez in the quaterfinal.

Her fine form continued in the semifinal with a 4-1 win over Hungary's Mercedesz Denes. She was rewarded with a place in the final against Japan's Yuki Irie, but her opponent proved too strong and recorded a 6-0 victory to secure the gold.

Hang's success helped Viet Nam finish the tournament placed 17th out of the 28 participating teams.-VNS
