Vietnamese teams lose second round matches at World Chess Olympiad

Viet Nam men's and women's teams failed to claim a second win at the World Chess Olympiad in Turkey on Wednesday.

In the second round, the men's team lost 1.5-2.5 to Bosnia & Herzegovina. The only win belonged to Le Quang Liem who defeated Bojan Kurajica.

Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Nguyen Duc Hoa were beaten by Emir Dizdarevic and Denis Kadric in the second and fourth boards, who both have lower rankings than the Vietnamese pair, while Nguyen Van Huy could only tie with Dalibor Stojanovic.

They will meet Malta in the third round.

The women's team could only manage 0.5 point against Hungary, thanks to Hoang Thi Nhu Y. Her teammates were unable to cause an upset against tough opposition in the three remaining boards.

In the first board, Pham Le Thao Nguyen was beaten by Hoang Thanh Trang who now represents Hungary after representing Viet Nam for 10 years.

They will face Albania in the next round. — VNS
