Weightlifter Thuy tops Group B

HA NOI — Weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thuy ranked first in Group B with a total lift of 195kg in the women's 53kg category at the London Olympics yesterday.

Yu Weili of China's Hong Kong and Henrriquez Gonzalez Inmara Tibisay of Venezuela finished second and third with 195kg and 194kg, respectively.

Thuy was chosen for an Olympic slot after finishing fifth at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in South Korea in April with a total lift of 190kg.

In the women's lightweight double sculls, Pham Thi Hai and Pham Thi Thao finished fifth in heat 5 with a time of 7:50.06. They will still compete in repechage.

In the qualifying round of the women's 10m air pistol, shooter Le Thi Hoang Ngoc stood at 21st with 379 points out of 49 players.

In the final of this discipline, Guo Wenjun of China took the gold medal, Goberville Celine of France and Kostevych Olena of Ukraine came second and third, respectively.

In the women's gymnastics, Do Thi Ngan Thuong was ousted from the qualifying round.

On Saturday judoka Van Ngoc Tu, who was first up at the Games, lost to Brazil's Sarah Menezes.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, who is the country's youngest athlete at the Olympics, didn't survive in the women's 400m medley. The result of 4:50.32 didn't help Vien to the final round.

In the men's 10m air pistol, Hoang Xuan Vinh faced 44 leading shooters in the world. He finished ninth in the qualifying round, failing to make the cut for the final by one point.

Vinh ranked fourth at the recent Asian Shooting Championship in Qatar. He is Viet Nam's first ever athlete to secure an Olympic shooting berth. — VNS
