Hung wins U18 rapid chess event

Nguyen Thi Mai Hung won the girls' U18 rapid chess event with six points at the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Sri Lanka on Monday.

The rapid event was held with seven rounds. Hung drew with her teammate Doan Thi Van Anh and Uzbekistan's Kurbonboeva Sarvinoz in the first and second rounds but powered to win in the five remaining rounds.

The event also saw the success of other Vietnamese athletes. Tran Tuan Minh finished second in the men's U18 age group with 4.5 points. Pham Tran Gia Thu won the girls' U8 with 6.5 while Nguyen Huynh Minh Thien topped the boys' U8 with 6.5, followed by his teammate Ngo Duc Tri with 6.

Nguyen Anh Khoi, with an Elo rating of 1913, won the boys' U10 group with 5.5.

Vu Thi Dieu Ai finished third in the girls' U14 category with 5.

Yesterday, players entered the standard event, most winning the first and second rounds in the U18, U14 and U10 groups.

The ninth and final round will be held on Sunday, followed by a blitz event in the afternoon.

The tournament which has attracted 308 masters from 19 countries will conclude on Sunday.-VNS
