Bulgarian striker Stoichkov visits over coaching job
HA NOI — Legendary Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoichkov is currently in Viet Nam at the invitation of the Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF).
The former Barcelona player is being considered as a replacement for national team coach Henrique Calisto who resigned last month.
Stoichkov was a member of the Bulgarian national team that finished fourth in the 1994 World Cup.
He was made European Footballer of the Year in 1994 and was named one of the 125 Greatest Living Footballers at a FIFA Awards Ceremony in 2004.
Stoichkov has coached a number of teams including Bulgaria's national squad since 2007. In 2009, he joined South African club Mamelodi Sundowns and led them to second place in the league but resigned after the end of the season.
Ha Noi lead in national archery champs
Ha Noi won the National Archery Championships at the Ha Noi-based National Sports Centre.
They pocketed 17 golds, 13 silvers and 16 bronzes. Hai Phong came second with four golds, six silvers and one bronze. Third place went to Phu Tho, which won four golds, two silvers and four bronze medals.
The event, organised by the Viet Nam Shooting Federation, lured more than 70 athletes competing in both individual and team events in recurve (one-stringed bow) and compound (three-stringed bow).
Easy win for HCM City at badminton competition
HCM City's badminton team easily beat the Army team to win the national mixed-team badminton championships that wrapped up yesterday at the Military Zone 5 Gymnasium in Da Nang City.
Minh, world No 8, easily beat Nguyen Hoang Hai 21-9, 21-14 in the men's singles match to put the HCM City ahead.
Phung Nguyen Phuong Nhi defeated Duong Nhat Huynh 21-14, 21-6 in the women's singles match to make it 2-0.
In the mixed-doubles match, Duong Bao Duc and Thai Thi Hong Gam beat Pham Ngoc Thiet and Nguyen Thi Be Tram 21-11, 21-13 to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
A combined Bac Giang-Bac Ninh team and another one from the National Sports Training Center shared the third prize.
Asian Women's Beach Volleyball tourney opens
The Asian Women's Beach Volleyball Championships kicked off yesterday in the northern province of Quang Ninh.
