Da Nang to host U-17 tournament

Da Nang will host the National U-17 Football Championship at Chi Lang Stadium on July 15-24, the organising committee announced yesterday.

The annual championship, which is organised by Football Newspaper, will see eight teams compete in two groups. The two top teams from each group will qualify for the semi-final with the winner walking away with VND60 million (US$3,100) in prize money.

At the press conference, Viet Nam Football Federation's general secretary Tran Quoc Tuan said the best players from the championship will be recruited by the national U-19 team.

Song Lam Nghe An have won the championship six times.

 

Nine-year-old golfer off to California

Vietnamese youngest golfer Nguyen Hung Dung left home yesterday to take part in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, California on July 10-16.

The nine-year-old boy, who has practised golf for three years and is coached by Malaysia's Edmund J.Au, aims to finish in the top 20 of U6-17 age category.

The annual golf event was opened in 1978 for golfers aged from 6-17. This year's tournament will attract golfers from 45 countries.

Leading golfers such as Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Nick Price and Tiger Woods played in the event as teenagers.

 

Table tennis team prepares for Asians

The national table tennis team has convened at the Ha Noi-based National Sports Training Centre in preparation for the 16th Asian Games in November in China and Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championship in December in the Philippines.

Alongside veterans, the team includes young players who have been called up to the national team for the first time including Nguyen Thanh Luan, Duong Van Nam, Nguyen Pham Thanh Thuy An and Dinh Thi Hang.

The 13 member team is coached by Nguyen Duc Long.

 

Kids undergo trials for football scholarships

The best of 50 kids nationwide will take part in football trials at the HCM City-based Thanh Long Sport Centre on July 25-27 for a three-year scholarship at the Qatar-based Aspire Sports Academy.

Kids from 30 provinces and cities will join in two qualifying rounds this week under the watchful eyes of coaches from the Qatar-based academy.

In March, teenager Nguyen Thai Sung was the first Vietnamese to gain admission to the academy on a three-year scholarship.

 

Berlin 1 win overseas Vietnamese contest

Berlin 1 took the Plus-Berlin football Cup after defeating Sachsen-Bayern on penalties in the final last weekend.

The amateur football tournament, which was organised for the Vietnamese Overseas community in Germany, drew six teams from Dresden, Magdeburg, Munich and Berlin.

The competition is part of a series of events to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Germany.

Next year, the tournament will be held in Chemnitz and Zwickau. — VNS
