The University of Copenhagen, Denmark, is founded.

1562

Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I signs a truce with the Sultan of Turkey, Suleyman I, agreeing to pay tribute for Austria 's share of Hungary .

1949

The Women's International Democratic Federation adopts June 1 as International Children's Day for a future of peace, stability and happiness for children. The decision derived from the mass killing of women and children by the German fascists in Lidice of Czechoslovakia (June 1942) and in Oradour of France (June 1944).

1968

Death of Helen Adams Keller (born 1880), US writer and lecturer. Keller was blind, deaf and mute from early childhood but learned to read, write and speak at the age of seven. She is noted for her work for the blind.

The Democratic Republic of Viet Nam and the Republic of Chile establish ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations.

Al-Qaeda announces that its No 3 official, Mustafa al-Yazid, has been killed along with members of his family – perhaps one of the most severe blows to the terror movement since the US campaign against al-Qaeda began.
