Stories of Mekong flood ‘not correct'

DONG THAP (VNS)— Dong Thap Province's Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecast has rejected information about this year's big flood in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta published recently by some local newspapers.

The director of the centre, Khuong Le Binh, was quick to dismiss reports that the unrelenting rains this week have caused water in upstream areas to rise up 8cm every day. He claimed that this information was untrue and unscientific.

Binh said that at present the water level in the Mekong River's source is 1.5-2 metres lower than that recorded during the same period in previous years.

Although these levels will rise based on the tides, data for the last month and the early part of this month indicates the crest of the flood is still at a low level.

Binh predicted that the crest of the flood would reach its highest level by the middle or end of October. The water in the Tien River is expected to rise to 3.6m, which is 0.1m higher than the warning level 1.

The highest water level of the year is expected to occur in the Dong Thap Muoi (Plain of Reeds) area, and will correspond to warning levels 1 or 2. This is still 0.2-0.6m lower than the average level of previous years, and is 1-1.2m lower than last year. Meanwhile, the water level in the southern areas of the Delta will be 0.2-0.3m higher than the average level of the previous years. — VNS
