More tremors hit power plant

HA NOI – (VNS) Three consecutive earth tremors hit the central Bac Tra My District's Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant areas early this morning, said Tran Anh Tuan, the district's People's Committee deputy chairman.

Tuan said the first tremor occurred at about 1am and the two others at 4.34 and 4.45 am, adding that their intensity were rather strong and lasted about five seconds each.

Initially, no injuries or damages have been reported.

Since the third of this month, about 20 similar earthquakes have hit the area. The strongest recorded a vibration of 4.2 on the Richter Scale and created cracks in many houses and schools in the district, said Tuan.

Yesterday, another two tremors hit the area.

Bac Tra My district has asked Quang Nam People's Committee for immediate food support for three months to support victims.

Training will also be given to commune leaders, school teachers and local people to help them survive any disaster.

More than 20,000 people live in vulnerable areas downstream from the dam, located in Bac Tra My District, on the Tranh River. – VNS
