Insurance dispute delays ship rescue

HCM CITY — A dispute over the cost of towing has delayed the rescue of a Vietnamese cargo ship and its crew off the coast of India for more than two weeks.

All 15 crew members of the Vietnamese cargo ship, Anh Son, whose rudder broke down off West Bengal State in India on June 26, reached the safety of Kolkata (Calcutta) Port on Thursday night.

A representative of the Hai Phong-based Anh Son Shipping Trading Co Ltd, which owns the ship, told that the ship would be in dock for four days for unloading goods.

The towing was delayed by a dispute over payment of insurance. The ship owner hired an Indian rescue company to tow the ship to port but the insurers refused to pay the original towing cost of US$250,000. — VNS
