HA NOI — Pop singer My Tam is among the Global Pop Sensations You've Never Heard Of on the ABCNews.com website.
The Vietnamese singer was among artists from all over the world named on Wednesday by chief anchor Diane Sawyer.
The internationally unknown pop stars have made their mark at home, according to the website, which lists the artists' achievements and the contributions they have made to the community.
My Tam has one of the most recognisable voices in Viet Nam, the website said.
Born in 1981 in Da Nang City, from the age of six she studied ballet for three years before moving on to learn the guitar and organ. She enjoyed singing, but was unaware of her talent until adulthood, and even then never saw it as a future career.
While at secondary school, she won a singing competition and was selected to represent the school in a municipal competition, where she win a solo award and the Gold Award for the Beautiful Voice of Spring 1997.
She won a place at the Military School of Art in Ha Noi, but for family reasons, studied at the HCM City Conservatory for four years. She graduated top of her class.
She has brought out eight successful albums including the latest Melodies of Time, which was launched last April. Melodies of Time is also the name she chose for her latest project that involves five albums and one live-show.
Melodies of Times is about those who always look back to the past to live a better future. "That is also my present viewpoint," My Tam said.
She is planning to launch a special edition album of old romantic songs.
My Tam was named Singer of the Year 2008 in the Contribution Award held by The Thao&Van Hoa (Sport&Culture) newspaper.
Early in her career, My Tam signed million-dollar deals to be the spokesperson for companies such as Pepsi and Honda. She even has her own fragrance My Time.
A charity fund was set up by the My Tam Foundation, which awards scholarships to underprivileged children and builds houses for the poor. She is also acting in the television series Cho Mot Tinh Yeu (For a Love).
"I'm surprised at the news. It's amazing. I'm so happy," Tam said, about being named on ABCNews.com's website. — VNS
