HCM CITY — Ha Noi-born artist Nguyen Xuan Anh is displaying 25 lacquer paintings in his first solo exhibition at Tu Do Gallery in HCM City.

Many of his works depict high-rises and crowded streets , while others feature mountainous areas, ethnic minorities or fields in moonlight.

Anh has broken with the traditional lacquer colours of red, yellow and black to incorporate light green and silver in some of his landscapes.

A member of Ha Noi’s Fine Arts Association, he began working with lacquer some years ago.

Born in 1977, Anh graduated from Ha Noi’s Industrial Fine Arts College in 1999. He has taken part in several group exhibitions including the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Ha Noi in 2005.

The artist has won several prizes including the gold medal in the Forever Green competition organised by UNICEF.

In 1999, his painting Childhood won a Nokia award in the competition Visions of Your Future.

The show can be seen at Tu Do Gallery, 53 Ho Tung Mau Street, District 1, through March 14. — VNS
