Dak Nong to invest $4.7m in medical waste treatment

DAK NONG (VNS)— Central Highlands Dak Nong Province plans to invest VND100 billion (US$4.7 million) building standard medical waste treatment systems for eight local hospitals from now until 2015.

The hospitals, including Dak Nong Polyclinic and hospitals in districts of Cu Jut, Đak Song, Đak Mil, Krong No and Dak Glong, were built long before medical waste treatment systems came to prominence, according to Director of the provincial Health Department Ngo Minh Truc.

Medical waste from these hospitals is currently buried, burnt or discharged into the environment, causing pollution and adversely affecting local people's health.

Authorities' inspections found that these hospitals discharged between 5-10 times the allowed level of medical waste water, while dust released from their incinerators is 1.2 times higher than the standard level.-VNS
