One million trees project takes root in Ha Noi

HA NOI -- (VNS) Approximately 150 trees were planted in Ha Noi-Amsterdam High School this morning, as the programme to plant one million trees in schools nationwide began to branch out.

At the ceremony, the school's deputy headmaster Le Thi Oanh said the programme aims to create green space for schools and improve students' awareness of the importance of planting trees and protecting the environment.

More 110 trees are also expected to be planted in Luong The Vinh High School today. The programme, jointly run by the Vietnam Environment Administration, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Vinamilk Corporation, will continue in schools in northern Hai Phong City, central Da Nang City, plus many other cities in the country.

Tran Phong, director of the administration's Environment Training and Communications Centre said the planting of trees would improve the quality of air in big cities and encourage initiatives to embrace the environment.

Previously, tree planting activities had been organised in Ha Noi and Da Nang cities and Tien Giang Province. -- VNS
