CA MAU - (VNS) As many as 84,000 people in the vulnerable southern Ca Mau province will benefit from a two-year climate change adaption project thanks to provincial Red Cross support.

The VND7.5 billion (US$360,000) project, with financial help from the Swiss Red Cross Association, aims to provide people in seven coastal communes in Dam Doi, Ngoc Hien and Nam Can districts with effective prevention measures against natural disasters, said deputy head of Viet Nam Red Cross's Disaster Management Nguyen Huu Thang.

Accordingly, 50 per cent of the seven communes' population will be trained to manage natural disasters in the region.

The project, which started early this month, is one of six huge projects tackling climate change and sea level rise in the province.

Ca Mau is a province which often suffers from disasters related to climate change including landslides, salinisation and tide rises. - VNS
